Today has been a pretty lazy day. I took what they call a “zero day,” meaning 0 miles walked on the A.T. Except for a trip downstairs to behold the poor excuse for a continental breakfast that Micro-tel presents, I stayed in my room from the time I woke up, until about 2:30 pm. It was nice to have the time to get caught up on my journals, clean gear, and repackage the food from my resupply box.

A little after 2:00 pm, my daughter Rachel arrived. She has been doing job interviews all around North Carolina, and several weeks ago she discovered that we would both be in nearly the same place at the same time. So, we had been planning this reunion for some time and my weather delay almost derailed our plan. But in the end, we managed to work everything out. It was so exciting to get to spend a little time with her!

Upon arrival, Rachel shifted right into Trail Angel mode and took me straight to the laundromat so that I could wash my clothes. She was a real trooper and didn’t show the least bit of embarrassment about being around me while I wore a rain jacket and rain pants while waiting for my laundry to be finished. After my clothes were dry, I changed out of the rain gear right there in the laundromat restroom. Mission accomplished.

Next stop was the Lazy Hiker Brewery. Because of the gimmicky name, I wasn’t expecting much here, but Rachel and I each ordered a five glass flight (believe it or not, we selected the same exact beers) and there were some really good beers in the lineup! So, the Lazy Hiker Brewery has a really cool vibe and comes recommend by me. Also, note that it is one of only three places in town to buy food that are open on Sunday night.

Rachel is a huge college basketball fan and had put me on notice that her beloved North Carolina team had a game at 6:15. So, we decided to switch our venue to a sports bar called Mulligans. That worked out well for Rachel because she was able to track her other bracket teams on the multiple screens. It worked out well for me because my Trail Angel bestowed some trail magic on me by buying me a 12 oz burger for supper.

I had a great time visiting with Rachel and I’m sad that the time was over far too soon. We are going to turn in at a reasonable hour because we both have big days ahead of us tomorrow.
